Natural Gas Extraction Video on health effects of Fracking featured for First Friday at Pebble Hill Interfaith Church; co sponsored by the Buxmont Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Green Sanctuary Committee What You Need to Know About Natural Gas Production featuring Dr. Theo Colborn will be shown at the First Friday video discussion at Pebble Hill Interfaith Church. Admission is free, donations accepted. What DO You Need to Know About Natural Gas Production? Is it still just THEIR problem in the Marcellus Shale regions of Northeast Pennsylvania, in Wyoming, Susquehanna, Lackawanna, and Wayne Counties? On January 3rd, the Associated Press revealed that more than 44,000 barrels of tainted water were dumped into the Neshaminy Creek by the Hatfield Township Municipal Authority in Colmar near route 309. The Neshaminy empties into the Delaware River by Croyden, PA. According to the AP, At least 3.6 million barrels of the waste were sent to treatment plants that empty into rivers during the 12 months ending June 30, according to state records. That is enough to cover a square mile with more than 8 1/2 inches of brine" and tons of toxic chemicals. Another 1.28 million barrels of liquid waste were unaccounted for. Although most of the extraction takes place well north and west of here, southeastern Pennsylvania been targeted as a place to dump their toxic waste. An NBC poll found that 86% of the people who knew about this were furious. Although there have been many calls to action, an appropriate response begins with understanding the situation and learning about the process. This video, produced by TEDX, The Endocrine Disruption Exchange, and the discussion that will follow will give vital accurate information on hydrofracturing deep shale, a process used in the Marcellus regions of the state. How does the process work? What is dangerous about it and what is not. The discussion will focus on why we should we care, how and when should we act, and what response might be most appropriate. Theo Colborn is Founder and President of The Endocrine Disruption Exchange (TEDX), based in Paonia, Colorado, and Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of Florida, Gainesville. She is an environmental health analyst, and best known for her studies on the health effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals. Colborn is a world-renowned expert on toxic chemicals. She is featured in numerous videos and sought after as an expert on chemical effects on health and the environment.
Among her awards are five Rachel Carson Awards, United Nations Environment Program Women Leadership for the Environment Award, International Blue Planet Prize, Beyond Pesticides Dragonfly Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council for Science and the Environment. |
