“Turn Off, Step Out, Tune In….To Nature”

Doylestown Township Park and Recreation Department is proud to support, “Turn Off, Step Out, Tune In….To Nature” and the mission of the Bucks County coalition of “No Child Left Inside.” The event is scheduled for Saturday April 11, 2009 from 11:00AM-1:00PM and is free to everyone. Doylestown Township’s Central Park is located at 425 Wells Road, Doylestown, Pa. For more information contact Stacey Mulholland at bringing.america.together@comcast.net.

Inspired by best selling author, Richard Louv’s book, Last Child in the Woods, the Bucks County Coalition of “No Child Left Inside” was formed in effort to forge the vital reconnection between our youth and nature. The coalition has been working to raise awareness on the issue by addressing community groups, elected officials, and organizing the spring event, “Turn Off, Step Out, Tune In…To Nature.” Through a variety of interactive, hands-on stations, children will learn about our natural resources, native species, and recreational opportunities which literally exist in their own back yards.

Doylestown Township’s Central Park will serve as the site for the event. The “Welcome Station” will be staffed by coalition members including Doylestown Township’s EAC, Doylestown Station’s Homeowner’s Association, Boucher & James’, “Making a Difference Committee,” State Senator Chuck McIlhinney and nonprofit, Bringing America Together. In addition to information on the coalition’s mission, young visitors will be provided with a “Passport to GREEN ” (GREEN is an acronym for Good Health, Recreation, Environmental Education, and Nature.) Following each visit to a station the Passport to GREEN will be stamped. All completed passports can be turned in for a prize and entry into a raffle.

As visitors meander through the park they will have an opportunity to explore the campsite created by Richard McNutt, Chairman of Plumstead Township’s Park and Recreation Committee. Nature by the Yard author Pam Newitt will be on hand to demonstrate nature oriented activities which kids can do right at home. Heritage Conservancy will host the nature walk and scavenger hunt through Hart’s Woods. (is that the official name) The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will share some exciting recreational activities for kids of all ages.

Additional interactive stations will be located just across the bridge at the Environmental Education Area. Bucks County Audubon will inhabit the Bird Blind for the day. Master Gardner Susanne Hewitt will offer insight as to how to plant a sustainable Butterfly Garden. Get wet and dirty at the storm water station with the Bucks County Conservation District and learn the value of meadow maturity with our Friends of Peace Valley.

As Chairman of the Plumstead Township Park and Rec, I would like to invite you to join us with displays and activities which will give kids a reason to come outside.

It’s about health and re-connection with living in joyful balance with Mother Earth.

This day will be a multi municipal partnership for this effort. We will set up a camp with tents and gear plus boats, Indian games, Woods art and lots of good reasons for he kids to get outside. We have unlimited space, so call me if you want to join us. Bring the kids and camping gear or whatever else you have for outside fun.
