Lower Delaware River Wild and Scenic

Grants -June 2009

The Lower Delaware River Wild and Scenic Quarterly Management Committee met  Tuesday June 30, at the Frenchtown Borough Hall.  The co-chairs, Carol Hoffmann, NJ and Nancy Janyszeski, PA hosted the well attended meeting and heard presentations from the following grant applicants. 

·         DRBC Lower Delaware Model Point Discharge Monitoring Proposal-012309.

o   Proposal to Enhance an Existing Water Quality Model of the Lower Delaware River from the Delaware Water Gap to Trenton, NJ - $53,000

·         Heritage Conservancy Protected Lands Grant

o   Preparation of Protected Lands Map for Communities Bordering the Lower Delaware Wild and Scenic River in Pennsylvania, will compile spatial data of the permanently protected lands within the 16 Pennsylvania municipalities bordering the Lower Delaware Wild and Scenic River. $10, 640.00

·         Hunterdon Land Trust 2009 grant application

o   Implementation of a 5-year management plan for public parkland within the Delaware River corridor of Hunterdon County -$ 29,344

·         New Jersey Conservation Foundation

o   Management plan for the Wickcheoke Creek $10,000

·         Experience the Delaware River Education Program

o   A collaborative effort to develop and implement a hands-on learning program on the Delaware River. Students in sixth through eighth grades from both New Jersey and Pennsylvania will develop an understanding of the vast richness of the Delaware River and its tributaries, and the importance and complexity of managing such a vibrant natural resource.        $37,000 -

 

The Lower Delaware River Wild and Scenic was designated in November 1, 2000, and is the longest free flowing river east of the Mississippi River. The Lower Delaware River is 67 miles along the border of eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey, and three Pennsylvania tributaries.

 Quarterly meetings are held alternately between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  The Next meeting will be September 2009, in Mount Bethel, PA.  The website will have updated information regarding grant applications and meeting dates.  http://lowerdelawarewildandscenic.org/

 We are pleased to say that the National Park Service and the Lower Delaware River Wild and Scenic approved all of the grants for a total of $139,984.
