New York City is shutting down the Rondout-West Branch tunnel of its aqueduct system for the third time since November.
The Department of Environmental Protection said the tunnel is being depressurized so that workers can fix pumps in the dewatering shaft. The ongoing repairs will eventually let the DEP fix a huge leak in a portion of the tunnel that runs through Wawarsing.
The DEP will temporarily increase releases from its Delaware reservoirs in advance of the shut down this week. The tunnel will remain shut down for approximately two weeks
